This has replaced the traditional approach of rewarding basic points given and the development of those points. The net effect of the change is to reward the depth of an answer rather than the breadth.

The four levels of response correspond to the level of skill used in the answer.

Level 1 – Knowledge: In this answer, the candidate demonstrates that he or she knows the subject.

Level 2 - Application: This is the ability to apply basic terms, concepts, theories and methods to the problem being assessed. An example to illustrate the difference between Level 1 and 2 relates to Maslow’s Theory of Motivation. A clear statement of the theory would attract a high mark (Level 1), but does not constitute application. To get into Level 2 it is necessary to apply the theory to work situation.

Level 3 - Analysis: Analysis is defined as breaking up information into component parts and identifying the assumptions on which a particular line of reasoning depends. Analysis includes presenting the advantages and disadvantages of a particular issue, suggesting causes and consequences and commenting on decisions or situations

Level 4 - Evaluation: Here the candidate has to make a reasonable judgment. This is not just conclusion, but a conclusion based on the material presented. Evaluation includes the following:

• Presenting a balanced argument resulting in a conclusion

• Assessing or appraising the value of information.

• Prioritizing a range of strategies.

• Recognizing the limitations of information given.

• Judgment after comparing and contrasting.

Command Words:

• Account for- To give reason for or explain or explain how a particular event or situation has come about.

• Advise: To give recommendations why certain courses of action should be adopted or a certain opinion accepted.

• Analyse: To break up an argument or information into component parts and identify the ways in which these parts are related.

• Assess: To weigh up and evaluate options or arguments or make some kind of judgement on the relative importance of a particular aspect of the subject.

• Comment on: To say what you think of the subject/ draw conclusions from the evidence. To agree or disagree with a stated position and must be backed by reasoned argument.

• Compare: To identify similarities and differences.

• Contrast: To show how the subjects are different.

• Consider: To weigh up the options.

• Critically Analyse: To weigh the pros and cons of an argument, proposal or theory; a criticism often stresses weaknesses, but should not overlook strengths, if any.

• Define: To give the exact meaning of the term and possibly an example.

• Describe: To give an account of the main characteristics of something, stating what it is. It is not a logical analysis.

• Discuss: To put forward both sides of a case before coming to conclusion.

• Distinguish: To show that you understand the differences between two concepts:

• Enumerate: To list the main ideas.

• Evaluate: To make a reasoned judgment about the validity of a particular argument or statement.

• Examine: To write out what you have to say for and against a subject; to say which side you support and give reasons for your support.

• Explain: To interpret the meaning of a particular concept with an example to illustrate understanding.

• Identify: To name and briefly describe.

• How: To show details of how something is achieved.

• Justify: To give evidence for a particular point of view.

• Outline: To state the main features of something without labelling subordinate details.

• Review: To give an overall view of the important parts of a subject and back your views with facts.

• State: To express fully or clearly.

• To what extent: To make a judgement about the degree to which a statement or theory is true.

Should every College be Co-educational?

Co-education is a system of educating boys and girls together. In ancient times, co-educational colleges were prevalent in Greece. There was no discrimination between boys and girls. They studied and played together. Along with academic education, physical training was also given to both the sexes. Plato, the Greek philosopher, believed that co-education helped in the development of personality of both men and women and created a feeling of comradeship among them. He felt that co-education was the only method to make both men and women useful members of society. Hence, in the west, the importance of co-education has been felt since ancient times.

In early Vedic Society (Ancient India), co-education was prevalent in a few places. But gradually female education began to be ignored. Moreover, the system of education was quite different from that of today. The boys stayed in Gurukuls, for the whole educational period. There they received both academic education and physical training. The former included the study of the scriptures and the latter, training in warfare. Girls were not sent to the Gurukuls, and thus were deprived of the benefits of education. In medieval India, those belonging to lower castes and the girls were not allowed to attend schools and colleges. Raja Rammohan Roy, great social reformer and scholar, fought against this practice and succeeded in his mission. His job was further carried on by other social reformers.

Today, co-education is prevalent in almost all the countries of the world. In India, there are a number of co-educational schools, colleges and universities. It is my experience that friendships develop in a very natural way in co-educational colleges. This happens because there are so many activities, societies and clubs in the colleges in which girls and boys take part in a pleasant, well-supervised environment. Friendships develop naturally and genuinely because the mixing is a by-product of the event. This friendly atmosphere continues into the classroom allowing young people to express their views openly and assertively. For both girls and boys, co-education provides a more realistic way of training young people to take their places naturally in the wider community of men and women. It helps to break down the misconceptions of each sex about the other and provides an excellent foundation for the development of realistic, meaningful and lasting relationships in later life. A co-educational college is also very successful in challenging sexist attitudes. Many subjects in college allow for considerable classroom discussion and debate. In a co-educational college both the female and male perspectives will be explored in such discussions and this is a very important learning experience for all.

Advocates of single-sex colleges sometimes make hefty claims about the academic advantages of such colleges, pointing to statistically significant disparities in examination results. In truth such differences may be due more to the socio-economic background of the pupils at the college or the selectivity of the intake. Co – educational colleges are considered better from social point of view because such places of education gives an opportunity to understand each other's problems and, therefore, can co-operate better in achievement of respective goals.

A healthy spirit of working and competing is created by co – educational colleges. The boys try to keep a polite and gentle character so as to give a good impression to their girls class - fellows. During their long period of education, they can better understand each other's psychology. The boy and girl educated together make the best match due to their broad attitude towards life and closer understanding of each other's habits and manners of living, likes and dislikes. Co-educational colleges generate harmonious relationship, a sense of co-operation, and thus, help in the progress of the nation. There are a number of advantages in the co-educational system of education. It is economical, poor countries cannot afford to open separate colleges for boys and girls. If boys and girls are taught together in the same college, then there will be no need to open separate colleges for them. Thus, the cost to be incurred on building infrastructure, furniture, stationery, personnel recruitment, etc. will be saved. There is acute shortage of good trained teachers in developing countries like India. If there is co-education, same staff can teach both boys and girls at the same time in the same class, and the problem of shortage can be dealt with. Establishing more of co-educational colleges can help in spreading literacy even with the limited teaching staff and infrastructure. Thus, it will be beneficial for both boys and girls and the nation as a whole. They become more broad-minded and tolerant towards the opposite gender. They interact freely with one another, thereby overcoming hesitation and shyness. The feeling of male dominance may be wiped out from the society if this system of education is given importance.

It should be acknowledged that in the fast changing society of twenty first century co-educational colleges have become the order of the day. Today girls are entering all professions in large numbers. Many of them are heading big organizations. Co-educational colleges will help young boys and girls to mix freely and understand one another better. Today's children are tomorrow's citizens. We must encourage them to develop their personality in a free healthy atmosphere. Girls no more have to remain confined to the four walls of the house. Co-educational colleges will help both sexes to learn and work together for the progress of the country.
